Dear J.T. & Dale: When May came around last year, my wife was ill and I was worn out and felt that I needed some time to regroup, so I voluntarily resigned my position. Six months ago I was ready to look for something new but have been unable to find a position. I’ve had some interviews, but they have gotten me nowhere. I am thinking about doing a mock interview for help. Any advice would be welcomed. — Chris Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: I’m an experienced, educated manufacturing manager who was downsized at the age of 62 in July of last year. I have been working daily through networking, Web sites and headhunters to find a new position. My wife thinks it is my age; although I don’t want to believe that, she may be correct. I do not want to retire — I am healthy, in good shape and have a lot to offer. What can I do? — Doug Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: I was laid off recently after almost 20 years as a project manager. I’m not sure how to answer the question about what my career goals are. I’m at a point in life where I just want a job to carry me to retirement. I’ve already been on the corporate ladder, trying to reach the top, and it’s too stressful. Plus, I’m a single mother with an elderly mother to take care of, so I already have two ladders I’m climbing. — Victoria Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: My daughter is a server at a local bar and grill. She was put on a one-week suspension more than a month ago, and they still have not put her back on the schedule. She has called, gone in to the establishment and even contacted corporate. No one will give her a straight answer. Why don’t they just fire her? She can’t even claim unemployment while she looks for another job. — Hanna Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: I started doing part-time recruiting in college for a friend, having no intention of staying in the placement industry. Once I graduated, I found that the only companies calling me were for jobs as a recruiter. I am miserable in my position and have been job hunting, but once again, the only companies calling are recruiting firms. Would it be best for me to erase my history on my resume and show just my education? — Steve Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: My current position is micromanaged, and I work from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. In a meeting today, our boss stated we should have no time off, and should work more and harder. Is that legal? With a stressful and negative environment, is it really wrong to quit and hunt for a job, explaining to prospective employers why you resigned? — Georgia Read the rest of this entry »

Dear J.T. & Dale: I have recently moved back to the states after two years in Italy. I’ve been living with friends while job-hunting, and I’m willing to relocate anywhere for the right job. I wish I had a recruiter/headhunter to assist me, and I’ve written to a few, but haven’t heard anything back. Are there any recruiters who would work with a middle manager like me? — Jimmy Read the rest of this entry »

We recently heard from Amanda, a reader who had conducted a terrific job search and took the time to pass along what she learned from the experience. She not only found a job, but managed a step up in title and pay. Let’s start with part of her first message to us. Read the rest of this entry »
