Boss Has Substance Abuse Problem

Dear J.T. & Dale: I like my job and my boss. The problem is that I know my boss has a substance-abuse problem. In my opinion, he is an alcoholic, and while I’m not certain, I think he uses drugs, too. I hate watching him slowly kill himself. Not to mention, he has embarrassed himself on more than one occasion in front of employees and clients. Great jobs close to home don’t come easily here. What should I do? – Gretchen

J.T.: Check to see if your company has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). If so, you should start by talking to one of its counselors (always a confidential call) and see if he or she can suggest the best way to get your boss some help. If your company doesn’t have an EAP, visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Web site at http://dasis3.samhsa.gov/. It offers a map, which can help you locate a substance-abuse treatment center in your area where you can ask for information on the best way to get your manager to recognize and treat his addiction.

Dale: That’s good advice, but as long as you’re facing up to hard facts, Gretchen, it’s important to remember that the odds are against your efforts. It also troubles me that he’s embarrassed himself in front of clients. The company’s reputation is your reputation too, especially “close to home.” Do the right and noble thing and try to find him help, but meanwhile, start the process of looking for a boss who will help you become a better, more valuable employee.

J.T.: We’ll hope for the best outcome that your manager pays gets treatment, and sees how lucky he is to have an employee like you.
