Are Librarians The Nation’s New Career Counselor?

Dale: Time for our monthly suggestion of useful career resources, and this time we want to feature those angels of information, librarians.

J.T.: A recent statement from the American Library Association called them the “nation’s new career counselors.” Most people looking for work forget about libraries as a resource … but they’re not just free, they come with computers and actual human beings to answer questions about online job searching, resumes and cover letters, and opening and using e-mail accounts.

Dale: As with anything, some are better than others — I’ve found a wide variation among librarians in knowledge and helpfulness. So shop around. Hey, when you’re out of work you don’t get to do a lot of shopping, so here’s a chance. After all, all those taxes you paid throughout the years helped fund your local libraries, so think of it as prepaid job service.
