What Should I Be When I Grow Up?

jtdale-closeup-color.pngDear J.T. & Dale: I am a 37-year-old female with a management degree from a good state university, but I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. Help. – Carri J.T.: The average American today has multiple careers with multiple jobs in each career. So, I wouldn’t think of it as growing up – more like you are moving along.

Dale: And you can get moving by reading a terrific book on choosing new careers, “Is It Too Late to Run Away and Join the Circus?” by Marti Syme. Or, you can explore the terrific free resources at J.T.’s new website, www.jtodonnell.com.

J.T.: You should also check out The Career Interests Game, a test that might be ideal for you, Carri, because of the manner in which the folks at the University of Missouri have utilized Dr. John Holland’s theory that you can link suitable careers to your interests. When you work with The Career Interests Game (found on the Career Resources page of this site), it turns into “Where in the World of Work Do I Find Myself?” and that’s a great way to find a direction.

The question that Carri asked is the same as the one I’m facing - what to do now.

I have tried to find the book you referred her to - “Is it too late to run away and join the circus” by Marti Syme and have had difficulty finding it.

Please let your readers know if a book is out of print or not - as this one is. I like solving problems but didn’t think finding a book was going to involve my engaging Sherlock Holmes.
