Changed Career Track & Now Don’t Have Enough Experience

Dear J.T. & Dale: I have worked in the same field for more than 17 years. I recently decided to change career tracks and go back to school to pursue a master’s degree in a completely different area. I have been searching for new employment ever since I began my classes, without success. My lack of experience in my new field is extremely detrimental to me — every position requires two years or more of experience. What can I do? — Kathy

J.T.: First, congratulations on the new degree and career! I know your current dilemma has you doubting your decision, but keep reminding yourself why you’re making the change, and keep tapping into the energy of doing something new. As for a new job, I’m curious — what has your university done to help you land an internship? What has it done to get you in touch with alumni who could help you get an internship?

Dale: Yes, the internship is the new apprenticeship; it’s one way to resolve the “experience required” conundrum.

J.T.: The other way is networking. Without experience, you need someone to give you a break, and, let’s face it, you’re never going to have your resume plucked from a pile of applicants offering experience. Rather, you need to meet someone who feels a kinship to your situation.

Dale: A university/alumni connection is one form of kinship, but so is switching careers. Try to find people in your new profession who made the same jump you’re making, and ask for their advice. Don’t ask for a job — at least, not at first — just advice. They’ll understand in ways you can’t where the old and new careers intersect and how to reframe your old experience. If all goes well, they’ll know of a job and will help you get it, and perhaps even become your guide; after all, they’ve walked the same path.
